CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – A group of same-sex couples in Charlotte is celebrating something they couldn’t imagine just a few years ago. A champagne toast was held at Holy Covenant United Church of Christ in north Charlotte Monday morning. Seven couples returned from Washington, DC, late Sunday night where they were married earlier in the day.
Same-sex marriage is not legal in North Carolina and these couples hope to send a message to those who oppose it. “This weekend was about the dignity of being recognized as a whole person,” one supporter told WBTV.
The Obama Administration recently announced it would no longer support the federal “Defense of Marriage Act”. That law allows states like North Carolina to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.
