ELDORADO, Texas (AP) – Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs goes on trial Monday on sexual assault charges punishable by up to life in prison.
The charges stem from a 2008 raid on a Texas religious compound where police believed underage girls were being forced into bigamist marriages.
But authorities’ first glimpse of the ranch came four years earlier when a traffic stop prompted suspicions of poaching.
Game Warden Marco Alvizo was allowed on the property and saw its residents run and hide from him. He saw too much construction for the area to be a simple hunting retreat, as residents claimed.
